First-time visitors often assume Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal are part of the same complex — they're not. They're two separate UNESCO World Heritage Sites about 2.5 km apart, each with its own entry ticket, and each tells a different part of the same Mughal story.
What is the Taj Mahal?
A white marble mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, completed around 1653. It's a single, self-contained monument surrounded by gardens — the building most people picture when they think of Agra.
What is Agra Fort?
A much larger, older red-sandstone fortress complex that served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors before Delhi's Red Fort took over that role. Enclosed by roughly 2.5 km of walls, it houses several palaces — including Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, both commissioned under Shah Jahan — along with grand audience halls like the Diwan-i-Khas and two finely carved mosques. It's also where Shah Jahan himself was later imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb, reportedly with a view of the Taj Mahal from his cell.
Tickets and timings
Both sites require separate tickets and are open roughly sunrise to sunset (the Taj Mahal opens/closes about 30 minutes either side of actual sunrise/sunset; Agra Fort keeps standard daytime hours). The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday — Agra Fort stays open. Because pricing changes periodically, always check current rates at the official ASI or UP Tourism ticketing sites before you travel.
Do you need to visit both?
