Best time to visit

October to March for clear, mild mornings. Sunrise is the quietest and most photogenic slot in every season. Closed every Friday.

Overview

A private guided visit to the Taj Mahal with your entry ticket already booked, so you walk past the ticket counter and straight to the gate. Your licensed guide meets you — at your Agra hotel if you choose pickup — handles the tickets, and spends two to three hours with you inside the complex: the great gateway, the gardens, the mausoleum itself and the riverside terrace behind it.

“Skip the line” here means the ticket line, which on a busy morning is where most of the waiting happens. Everyone still goes through the security check at the gate, but foreign-national ticket holders use their own lane, which is usually far shorter than the general one.

Already have a guide, or only need the ticket sorted? The Taj Mahal ticket booking with a complimentary guide is the simpler, cheaper option. Coming from Delhi for the day? See our sunrise day trip from Delhi.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Meet Your Guide

Your guide meets you at your Agra hotel (with the pickup options) or at the Taj Mahal's East Gate. Tickets are already booked, so there's no counter queue — just the security check, through the foreign-national lane.

    Taj Mahal East Gate

  2. 2

The Great Gate and the Gardens

Through the red sandstone Darwaza-i-Rauza for the first, framed view of the Taj, then along the Charbagh gardens and the long reflecting pool while your guide explains how the whole complex was laid out around symmetry.

    Taj Mahal

  3. 3

    Inside the Mausoleum

Up onto the marble plinth and into the main chamber — included in your ticket — with the cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan, the pietra dura inlay of semi-precious stones and the calligraphy that seems to stay the same size all the way up the arches.

    Taj Mahal

  4. 4

The Mosque and the Riverside Terrace

The red sandstone mosque and its mirror-image twin, the Jawab, then the terrace above the Yamuna for the view across to Mehtab Bagh and Agra Fort.

    Taj Mahal

  5. 5

    Agra Fort (Optional)

With the Agra Fort option, continue to the red sandstone fort two kilometres upriver, where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking out at the Taj from the Musamman Burj.

Frequently asked questions

What does “skip the line” actually skip?

The ticket counter queue — your ticket is booked in advance, so you go straight to the gate. Everyone still passes a security check, but foreign-national ticket holders have their own, usually much shorter, security lane.

Is entry into the main mausoleum included?

Yes. The foreign-national ticket we book covers the complex and the ₹200 main-mausoleum supplement, so you can go inside the chamber with the cenotaphs.

What time should I go?

Sunrise. The Taj opens 30 minutes before sunrise, and the first hour has the softest light and the fewest people. Pick your preferred start time when booking and we'll match it to sunrise on your date.

Is the Taj Mahal open every day?

No — it's closed every Friday for prayers at the mosque. The booking calendar won't offer Fridays.

What can't I take inside?

Food, tobacco, tripods, drones and large bags aren't allowed. Phones and cameras are fine, and there's a free cloakroom at the gates for anything you need to leave.

How is this different from the ticket booking with a complimentary guide?

This is the full guided tour, with hotel pickup and Agra Fort available. The ticket booking is for travellers who mainly want the entry ticket arranged — a guide still comes free at the gate, but there's no pickup or Agra Fort option.

Do children need a ticket?

Children under 15 enter the Taj Mahal free, so you only pay for travellers aged 15 and over.

Know more about this tour

The Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, and took around twenty years and some twenty thousand workers to complete. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The cenotaphs you see in the main chamber are symbolic; the actual graves of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan lie in a quieter crypt directly below.
